Cristiano Ronaldo has made Champions League history last night by becoming the first player in the history of the competition to score 18 times in a single calendar year.

The Portugal international looks back to his best for Real Madrid with a brace this evening against Apoel Nicosia to help Zinedine Zidane’s side bounce back after some poor recent form.

Real were beaten 3-1 by Tottenham last time in the Champions League, and are also faring badly domestically after a 0-0 draw with Atletico Madrid at the weekend put them ten points behind Barcelona in the race for the title in La Liga.

Still, Ronaldo loves the Champions League and has netted for the eighth time in the competition this season – seven more than he’s managed in the Spanish league.
And in doing so, Ronaldo now holds a place in the Champions League record books once again for his incredible haul, and he’s still got time to add to it.

The 32-year-old may be approaching his decline if his performances against higher calibre opposition are anything to go by, but he remains a joy to watch when he’s in this kind of form in front of goal.
