The Executive Director of Narconon, Hon Taiwo Ayedun Shanana has cautioned the public from excessive drug abuse, warning that the negative effect of excessive drug abuse can be severely damaging and life threatening sometimes.
Ayedun said this while delivering a lecture at Narconon sensitization programme towards fight against drug abuse and ensuring a drug free society in commemoration of the 2018 International Drug Free Day which was marked globally on the 26th June annually. He noted that the extent at which people abuse drugs lately is alarming. He said young people especially tend to damage their both psychological and physiological assets by constantly injecting into their system different substances capable of destroying them eventually.
Hon Taiwo Ayedun said most information given about drugs is not true as they either come from those selling them or those using them. He said research has shown that 9 out of 10 young people who took drugs for the first time later got addicted to it.
Hon Ayedun, in his speech, emphasise on the need to focus more on preventive measure against drug abuse rather than focusing on treatment. According to him, our society has limited medical outlets that can deal with negative consequences of drug abuse, stating that cases of patients relapsing back into drug abuse after treatment are becoming rampant.
On the theme of this year’s commemoration which is “LISTEN FIRST”, Hon Ayedun said listening to children and youths help parents understand their children and external forces capable of driving their children into drugs.
“I want to urge parents to ensure adequate monitoring on their wards. Prevention is the best treatment when it comes to avoidance of drug abuse. Once an individual has started to abuse drug intake, the consequences of its negative impacts becomes unpredictable”, Ayedun concluded.
