Nigerian singer and disc jockey DJ Cuppy has been featured in the latest edition of First on SoundCloud, a segment which aims to shine the light on most promising artists.
The feature comes off the heels of DJ Cuppy’s recent debut album titled Original Copy.
“At 27 years old, she’s already a veteran of the African music scene”, reads a statement, citing DJ Cuppy’s showcases at the MTV Africa Music Awards, her collaboration with notable African artists and journey to becoming a broadcaster on Apple Music Radio’s Africa Now, which she now hosts.
Previous artists who have been featured on First on SoundCloud include US singer and songwriter Kehlani, Berlin-based South Korean DJ Peggy Gou, and British rapper Little Simz, all of whom credited the music platform for playing a pivotal role in their careers.
Commenting on the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the making of Original Copy, DJ Cuppy said: “My album certainly took a deeper and more meaningful direction and I learnt to listen to my own inner voice. For the first time, I could be Cuppy, the creative without any distractions.”
Original Copy features guest appearances from an array of musicians such as Ghana’s Stonebwoy and Efya, Nigeria’s Rema, Seyi Shay, YCee, Fireboy DML and Teni, the UK’s Ms Banks and Darkoo, as well as Wyclef Jean (US) and Jamaica’s Julian Marley. It consists of 10 songs and was preceded by singles ‘Jollof on the Jet’ and ‘Karma’.
The body of work narrates her journey as an emerging musician when she launched her career at the age of 13, through to her current features and how she earned the ‘Princess of Afrobeats’ title.
Speaking to Music In Africa about her career last month, DJ Cuppy said: “It’s been an amazing and inspiring journey for me so far and I hope to continually do me, breaking norms and exploring my creativity. I’m such a workaholic; always working on a new project. I’m looking forward to bigger projects and global collaborations. I hope my journey inspires others to just go for it and there would be more ‘Cuppys’ in the coming years.”
Born Florence Ifeoluwa Otedola, DJ Cuppy is signed to London-based artist services company, Platoon. Some of her other music collections include House of Cuppy (2014) and House of Cuppy II (2015).
